Reboot

My name is Chon Torres and I am on a journey to return to tech after a 19 year break. I wrote database code in high school, got a Physics degree from a top tier college, and eventally worked on 3d graphics code (an application called Maya, now owned by Autodesk) that along with 100+ engineers won an technical academy award.

In 2002 I ended all of that and started working with non-profits. I managed and lead people to do good in this world and eventually was part of leading 150 organizations. That came to close when I went through a re-org and felt it was time to return to technology as a software engineer and hopeful technical mamager at the age of 50.

This blog is going to be about my experience, my thoughts, and lots of technical notes that I want to record for future reference. I want to contribute to this community!

Are you looking for tech work, but don't have a standard technical background? Here's some good news! It is all about what you can show now, not always about what you have done or how you got there.

No one cares what college I went to. While I think my experience is going to be helpful in my future, no recruiters seem to think it is valuable. Everything is about what I have done right now and can show though immediate experience. Effectively I am a self-taught programmer trying to break into the tech industry. OK. Let's go!

This experience is humbling and clarifying. My hope is this blog will be clarifying for the reader. Join me as I am figuring this all out. Along the way, I hope my technical writtings are helpful to you and the occasional comments about my specific path are helpful as well.

My approach is writing this blog as a learner and not an expert. I invite any comments for suggestions on improvement. I truely want to help others as they learn.

This blog will be focused on my interests and I am interested in exploring topics you might suggest. Lets stay connected and see what happens.
